Product Overview

Bacteriostatic Water (10ml) is the foundational solvent for the reconstitution of lyophilized research peptides and biological compounds. Unlike standard sterile water, which is a single-use solvent, this preparation is formulated with 0.9% Benzyl Alcohol (C₇H₈O). This additive serves a dual function: it acts as a bacteriostatic preservative to inhibit microbial colonization for up to 28 days after the initial puncture, and functions as a co-solvent to enhance the solubility of hydrophobic peptide chains.

Mechanism of Action: Microbial Inhibition

The efficacy of bacteriostatic water relies on the lipophilic properties of Benzyl Alcohol. Upon contact with potential contaminants (gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria), the benzyl alcohol molecule intercalates into the bacterial cell membrane.

  1. Membrane Fluidization: The alcohol increases the fluidity of the bacterial lipid bilayer, destabilizing the membrane's structural integrity.

  2. Enzymatic Disruption: This structural destabilization interrupts essential enzymatic processes and transport channels within the bacterial cell, effectively halting replication (bacteriostasis) without necessarily lysing the cell immediately.

  3. Hydrolysis Buffering: The solution typically maintains a slightly acidic pH (approx. 5.7), which provides a more stable environment for delicate peptide bonds that are prone to degradation (hydrolysis) in neutral or alkaline water.

Laboratory Protocols & Stability

The 28-Day Standard: Once the butyl rubber stopper is punctured, the USP guidelines dictate that the bacteriostatic properties are guaranteed for 28 days.

  • Unopened: Stable at Room Temperature (20°C to 25°C) for up to 2 years.

  • Opened: Must be refrigerated (2°C to 8°C) to maintain the integrity of the preservative and any reconstituted compounds.

Contraindications: Strictly for In-Vitro and Laboratory Research Only. Due to the potential toxicity of benzyl alcohol in specific tissues, this product must never be used for intrathecal, epidural, or intraocular procedures, nor used in neonatal research settings.
